My paws touch the earth. Listening. Measuring. Hearing the sound of a heartbeat that hasn’t happened, yet.

Our pack waits. We sent them all away yesterday. That wasn’t planned, not until I saw the first of the boxes come out of storage nooks and crannies and began to understand what the decorating team truly intended.

I don’t issue sentinel edicts often. This one was worth it, and not just for the judiciously offered handful of gummy bears I got from Kelsey after everyone other than the decorating crew left. There isn’t a wolf in this building who got more than snatches of sleep last night, and most of us have walked into a wall at least once, but what we’ve brought to life inside these walls is priceless.

Up the mountain, I can feel Hayden sensing the moment that’s building. He won’t have the details, not yet, but he’ll roll with them when they land. He’s an alpha born and raised for days like this one.

My paws move on the earth. Circling. Honoring. Adding what a sentinel can offer to what has already been built. I don’t know if the building needs it, but I do.

I take a moment to be with the stretch and tilt of my own soul, and then I check in with those who are walking the same circle in my wake. Reassurance comes back to my paws, and solidarity. We are eleven wolves greeting the morning with weary, victorious hearts. There was doubt in the deep of night. There isn’t any now.

The smallest wolf in the circle turns, tracing a path in the dirt just inside my larger one. Each larger wolf she passes nuzzles her cheek, adding their blessing to whatever it is that moves her paws.

My sentinel isn’t sure, but he trusts her absolutely.

Kelsey looks at him as she approaches, her eyes firm and bright.

He begins to understand her intentions.

He wavers.

She taps her paws lightly on the earth. Silly sentinel.

He answers slowly. With respect. It could be done in parts. In stages. In careful steps. Perhaps later, when the bigger building comes and the pack has had time to adjust.

She stops and tips her head, watching him. Waiting.

He looks inward, asking the hard question. The one a healer must always ask. Is he the one who hurts?

Her eyes glow. I see in their depths the most profound truth of the last three days. The wholeness that came in the midst of, and because of, breathtaking speed. I tremble. Souls don’t come with detailed instructions and exquisitely engineered parts.

Gentle, bubbling laughter from the earth, and from the small red wolf standing light on its surface.

Oops. I exhale my need to hold, to steady, to control. To engineer.

A small red wolf nuzzles my cheek. I am sometimes silly, but she loves me very much. She turns, walking in front of me this time, her paws making a promise in absolute silence.

I place big black paws in her footsteps and use what I was given to be her megaphone.
